Why aren’t the LEOs unmasking these people in the 1st place. Wearing a mask strongly tells you are about to commit a crime and remain anonymous. Robbers – rapists – gang bangers – looters all wear masks.

They don’t unmask them because the politicians will not allow it. They encourage these knuckleheads because (presumably) the underlying premise is anti-fascism. It’s a game they’re playing where the words are mismatched with the actions of the players. In the end the politicians appear to be just and upright representatives supporting a noble cause, in actuality they could care less about the population as long as they enjoy power.
Wearing a mask is empowering. The wearer feels invincible and empowered to act in a way that they never could without the mask. You’re right though, strip the mask from their faces and they revert to mamma’s little boy.
That’s the thumb they suck on. They are protecting it.
